Calum Fraser is a versatile conductor who specialises in operatic and choral repertoire. He studied at The University of Manchester and with Simon Halsey, Adrian Partington and Sarah Tenant-Flowers. Calum is the founding Artistic Director of Magnetic Opera, with whom he has conducted The Barber of Seville, Maria Stuarda, La bohème, The Medium and The Marriage of Figaro. Previously, he was Musical Director of Winterbourne Opera (The Elixir of Love, Faust, Die Fledermaus) and Opera'r Ddraig (Acis and Galatea, Così fan tutte, Dido and Aeneas, Orpheus in the Underworld). Calum is a founding Musical Director of Scottish professional chamber choir Caledonian Voices and Musical Director of Streatham Choral and Farnham & Bourne Choral Society. He is also Director of Choirs at The University of Nottingham, with whom he travelled to Malaysia in 2016 and directed orchestral performances in Ningbo and Zhejiang, China, in 2017. Previously, Calum has worked with ensembles including St George’s Singers and Ad Solem and has appeared in masterclasses with leading conductors including Richard Bonynge and Eric Whitacre.
Accompanist: Richard Leach
Richard Leach is a freelance pianist and organist. He was the musical director for Tosca (Grimeborn), and the Spring 2017 revival of Il Barbiere di Siviglia (Pop-Up Opera), and has played for I Capuleti e i Montecchi (Pop-up Opera). He was the assistant conductor for the Woodhouse Festival 2014 (Die Zauberflöte, Cavalleria Rusticana, Pagliacci). He has worked on The English Concert's and The Merry Opera Company's productions of Messiah and The Grange Festival's Il ritorno d'Ulisse in patria. Whilst a post student fellow at the Royal Academy of Music he was the assistant conductor for Royal Academy Opera's productions of Le Nozze di Figaro, Suor Angelica and L'Incoronazione di Poppea; he was Chorus Master for May Night and Ariodante. He prepared the Bridesmaid's Chorus for the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment's Der Freischütz under Sir Mark Elder; he was the répétiteur for Mahler's Second Symphony with the Royal Academy of Music Symphony Orchestra and Chorus under Semyon Bychkov, and he has coached at Trinity Laban Conservatoire for L'Incoronazione di Poppea under Nicholas Kraemer. He plays regularly for Streatham Choral and The Music Makers Choir of Harpenden. As a piano accompanist he has performed at the Wigmore Hall; the Djanogly Recital Hall, Nottingham; Charlton House; Faversham Assembly Rooms; and on BBC Radio 3's In Tune. He is the Organist of Ealing Abbey Choir.
